Ben McAdoo at peace with how he handled Eli Manning benching

When former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo broke his post-firing silence last week, he said he wouldn’t have stood on the table to draft any of this year’s top prospects to be Eli Manning’s successor.

McAdoo’s thoughts on that front may be surprising to those who recall how his tenure with the Giants ended. McAdoo benched Manning prior to a Week 13 game in Oakland and gave Geno Smith the start in what some thought was the beginning of the end for Manning with the Giants.

McAdoo’s overall bedside manner loomed large in the piece as he also wrote about the need to be more engaging with the media whenever he returns to coaching. McAdoo said a friend told him he sounded like an oaf and needs to work on finding a way to expand on my answers without giving away any secrets.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Steelers offered Bell a five-year, $70 million deal. The contract reportedly would have paid out more than $30 million over two years.

That doesn’t reveal nearly enough. What was the signing bonus? How much was fully guaranteed at signing? How were the final three years structured? The $14 million annual average means nothing without knowing the payout in year one and the average value through two, three, and four years.

Remember, Bell already has $14.5 million on the table for 2018. The Steelers offered another $55.5 million in exchange for four more years, with no details whatsoever on how that would be paid, other than Bell getting more than $30 million over two years.

If the goal is to make Bell look greedy and unreasonable in the eyes of fans who believe he’d actually get $70 million, mission accomplished. But as it relates to any realistic effort to understand what was actually put on the table, it’s not nearly enough.

Ed O’Bannon’s lawsuit against the NCAA led to EA Sports discontinuing the game

However, O’Bannon was a lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the NCAA and EA Sports over the use of players’ names and likenesses. EA Sports never used players’ names in its games, but that was about the only thing it didn’t replicate.

The first time O’Bannon meets someone, he said nine times out of 10 they ask about video games. I was in the gym the other day and a guy looked at me and said, ‘Hey, I know who you are, you’re the one that got the games taken away,’ he said. He laughed about it. When I say my name, I expect someone to say that. If that’s what you recognize me for, I refuse to try and change your mind or justify my actions.

Current players are torn, however. Making money would have been great, but as Tennessee linebacker Sapp pointed out, seeing themselves in the game was worth something, too.

Or just roll a pair of dice to decide the outcome of games & skip the soccer altogether.

Soccer fans don’t seem as sensitive as hockey fans when it comes to people knocking their sports, but Wilson did receive some blow back. The best part, though, was people using Dwight memes and The Office references to reply to Wilson’s World Cup bashing.

I didn’t lead with the LeBron news today because you’ve been inundated with takes and opinons about it for 12-15 straight hours already. (If you want a roundup of the best tweets and memes, my colleague, Dan Gartland has you covered in today’s Hot Clicks.) I said last week that I didn’t want him to sign with L.A. because as an old person on the East Coast, I won’t be able to stay up to watch him play that much.

Former Texan Andre Johnson thinks DeAndre Hopkins is ‘best in the game’

DeAndre Hopkins is one the NFL’s premier wide receivers and everyone knows it including Andre Johnson.

The former Texans Pro Bowl player said as much Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

I definitely think he’s arguably the best in the game, Johnson said. He finally has a quarterback that’s pretty steady.

While some players have said they’ll decline participating in this year’s Home Run Derby if invited, Nationals slugger Bryce Harper confirmed his commitment to the event on Friday, assuming he’s named to the NL All-Star team.

If he doesn’t rebound in the second half, his stock is decreased dramatically, the NL exec said. He’ll still get a lot of money, but not anywhere near if he had a year like he was having last year before he got hurt.

According to one AL general manager, though, Harper’s struggles — even if they persist throughout the second half — can’t be evaluated in a vacuum. People don’t look at things in one-year buckets, the GM said. You look at things in a three- or four-year bucket because you’re trying to forecast what you’re buying over the course of that contract. So using one year as the driver of your analysis is problematic. Also clouding the picture is the aftershock of last winter’s free-agency free fall.

The fact that Bowles and Bates have been open-minded about possibly starting Darnold right away is good news for the rookie. At the very least, the approach will make Darnold eager to absorb everything he can from McCown and Bridgewater to enhance his all-around talent as quickly as possible.

To make it fair and to make sure Darnold will be ready, the Jets are not holding back or easing the playbook burden on the rookie. For Week 1, it comes down to who can deliver as a playmaker with confidence and not get by as a caretaker.

Darnold is the youngest QB in the league, having turned 21 on June 5. He is also coming off a turnover-filled final season at USC. Even with his prototypical profile, he needs a degree of polish and can’t be trusted to be efficient enough for the Jets to feel comfortable with him initially.

In Cleveland, Baker Mayfield has no shot to overtake Tyrod Taylor; Darnold in New York has the second toughest path to starting as a rookie first-rounder. McCown and Bridgewater are stronger combined options than Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon ahead of Josh Rosen (Cardinals) and AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman ahead of Josh Allen (Bills).

That’s a rare win for the Browns these past two years.

Jackson will be joined by more than 100 Browns employees for the plunge, and they’ll submerge for a good cause. The head coach will donate $100 for every Browns employee who jumps in with him to the fight to end human trafficking in Northeast Ohio through his Hue Jackson Foundation.

It’s going to be a fun time, it’s going to be something that’s special to me and the organization and everybody involved, he said two days before the jump, because this is going to turn the page on a lot of things that have gone on here.

The time of the jump is still unknown, but hopefully Jackson is able to avoid the rain. There’s a 50 percent chance of storms in Cleveland on Friday. Either way, Jackson’s going to endure it not only because he said he would, but also to help fight human trafficking.

Parity rules in the NFL — mostly. So who is ready to dethrone 2017’s division champs?

Alright, this felt like therapy. I needed to get all of this off my chest.

Chicago stepped up to take care of its injured tight end.

Zach Miller’s football future is in jeopardy after suffering a potentially career-ending injury last fall, but the Chicago Bears are taking care of him. The franchise signed its veteran tight end to a one-year contract that was guaranteed to pay him even if he couldn’t return to the field. Last season, Miller nearly had to have his left leg amputated after suffering catastrophic damage against the Saints.

The contract will still pay Miller $458,000 guaranteed. That figure would have risen to $790,000 if he could take the field. It’s a small payout for a team with an estimated $27 million in salary cap space left to spend this offseason, but still an important gesture that keeps a veteran free agent in the fold and able to receive team medical care in the near future.

Call us crazy, but we have three not-so-modest proposals for revolutionizing baseball.

The second-best: A successful sacrifice bunt, but the defense — perhaps under pressure because the bunt was placed so well — makes a throwing error to first base. The runners circle the bases! The pitcher who made the errant throw drops to his knees and puts his head in his hands, before running to back up home plate. The batter chugs down to first and takes a big turn, maybe even goes to second base while the right fielder paws for the loose ball under the security guard’s stool in foul territory. Harvey has done this zero times.

The third-best: A walk. The batter has a goal, but he’s aware enough to know that the right circumstances can open up an even better opportunity. These are rare, but they happen, and they are, also, pure profit, with the runners advancing, a new baserunner joining the train, and no out recorded. Harvey has done this zero times.

The seventh-best: Fail to get the bunt down, have the bunt sign removed, and strike out anyway. An out is added to the ledger, but that’s all the damage, and now you’re back in the dugout drinking some alkaline water and getting ready for the next inning while the top of the order tries to pick those runners up. No attaboys, but as long as you didn’t strain your rib cage we can happily admit we didn’t expect much from you anyway. Harvey has done this two times.

Shazier spoke at a press conference — his first time speaking to media after his December injury.

My dream is to come back and play football again, Shazier said. I’ve been working my tail off every day and I have that in the back of my mind every day I go to rehab.

The NFLPA noted the departures in an official statement to ABC News.

We respect the decision of Deborah Epstein and Susan Else to resign from our commission. We have implemented many of the commission’s recommendations during the past few years and will continue to provide resources and services to our members,

Despite the association’s re-assurances, league officials told ABC they were not aware of any recommendations from the committee or from the NFLPA.

The resignations will re-focus a spotlight on the league’s and NFLPA’s efforts to stamp out domestic violence. The league and commissioner Roger Goodell instituted a broad personal conduct policy for players and league personnel in 2014 that has resulted in suspensions over domestic violations incidents, but it’s unclear what impact, if any, the players’ association efforts have had.

Felipe Vazquez got the last two outs for his 16th save.

The Pirates won for the third time in nine games and the Padres lost for the 10th time in 12 games.

While Musgrove dominated, the Pirates piled on against rookie lefty Eric Lauer (3-5) and the Padres. The Pirates scored an unearned run in the first inning on two singles and Austin Hedges’ passed ball, and added four runs, including two unearned, in the third. Hedges and shortstop Freddy Galvis each had a throwing error. Gregory Polanco hit a two-run double and was thrown out to end the inning trying to stretch it into a triple. Josh Bell hit an RBI triple and Elias Diaz drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

That looks untenable. I would expect the Wolves to explore the trade market for Wiggins soon, if they haven’t started already. To shed his salary, they might have to wait until next summer, when a team with unused cap room could be willing to take Wiggins into space — and send out something nice in return.

He wanted to wear the number, let him wear the number, Irving said to ESPN on Monday.

Irving wore the No. 2 with Cleveland from 2011-1He made four All-Star teams during his time with the Cavaliers and helped the team win an NBA title in 2015-1But Irving reportedly wanted a bigger offensive role and forced a trade to the Celtics in August.

The Cavaliers advanced to their fourth straight NBA Finals, where they were swept by the Warriors, and then selected Sexton with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The story is probably going to be the number, but I’m more excited about who (Sexton) is as a player in the league, Irving said to ESPN. The number thing is like, just chalk that up to the game. It’s cool. It’s no hard feelings from my end. He just has to start at the chopping block just like everyone else did. So, I’m excited for him.

Irving was an All-Star during his first season with the Celtics, averaging 24.4 points and 5.1 assists over 60 games. But he injured his knee in March and missed the playoffs. The 26-year-old guard wears No. 11 in Boston.

Lakers’ NBA title odds improve to 7-2 after LeBron James acquisition

The Los Angeles Lakers, with the addition of LeBron James, are suddenly top-tier contenders to win next season’s NBA championship, according to Las Vegas sportsbooks.

After news broke Sunday evening that James is headed to Los Angeles, the Westgate SuperBook reopened the Lakers at 9-2 to win next year’s title.

The Lakers’ odds immediately were trimmed to 7-2 after a respected wager quickly came in on the Lakers, according to Westgate assistant manager Jeff Sherman.

Only the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors have better championship odds than the Lakers at the Westgate. The Warriors are odds-on favorites at -110 to three-peat.

The Boston Celtics, like the Lakers, are 7-2. The Houston Rockets, at 7-1, are the only other team with single-digit odds.

The current odds on the Lakers also reflect the possibility of them landing another big name, including potentially Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs.

We have [the Lakers] lower based on anticipated support and the possibility of adding to the roster, Sherman told ESPN in a text message.

Moore has also played for the Rangers, Coyotes and Blue Jackets in an eight-year career.

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell added an RBI single in the fourth inning and made a highlight grab in the sixth inning before leaving the game with an apparent injury resulting in the catch. Russell bumped into Baez while making the running catch on Eduardo Escobar’s ball down the left-field line in foul territory. He walked off the field and into the dugout after talking to a team trainer and manager Joe Madddon.

Twins: LF Eddie Rosario, one of three Twins to leave Saturday’s game due to heat was in the lineup on Sunday. Teammates Bobby Wilson and Max Kepler were available, as was infielder Ehire Adrianza, who received intravenous fluids after finishing the game.

We just encouraged everyone last night to rest and hydrate the best they could again this morning to get themselves in positions to get through the game, Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said. You just try to be aware of it. There’s not much you can do: You’ve got to play people and you’ve got to get through the game. . SS Jorge Polanco’s 80-game performance-enhancing drug suspension ends Monday and Molitor said he expects him to rejoin the club in Milwaukee after a stint with Triple-A Rochester.

Excessive heat at Wrigley Field forces 3 Twins players from game

Minnesota’s Eddie Rosario, Bobby Wilson and Max Kepler all left early because of heat illness on a scorching afternoon at Wrigley Field, as the Chicago Cubs beat the Twins 14-9.

The Cubs said it was 96 degrees when Rosario exited during the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday. He hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, then left shortly after fielding a hit by Anthony Rizzo.

Nats ace Max Scherzer struck out three Rays batters on nine pitches in the sixth inning, joining Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson as the only pitchers in MLB history to record multiple immaculate innings.

Max Scherzer’s surprise single, mad dash beat Braves

The Nationals’ ace wasn’t scheduled for their key series in Atlanta, but his pinch hit set up a win in extras.

Bosh has been retired from the game since 2017, when a second recurrence of blood clots pushed him out of the remainder of his contract with the Heat. Multiple instances of blood clots require patients to be put on blood thinners, and those drugs present potentially fatal risks for high-level athletes — hard contact could lead to internal bleeding, which is especially dangerous when on blood thinners.

Still, Bosh has been adamant that he will return to the NBA, and that he should be ruled eligible to do so. The NBA has a fitness to play clause that prevents players from appearing in games while they have life-threatening injuries or illnesses, and for that reason, Bosh has been kept out of the league.

The NBPA has been silent on Bosh’s case, citing medical privacy.

Latest Yankees Triple-A scouting reports

When told of Mitchell’s assessment, Rothschild made it sound like it’s quite unlikely the Yankees would consider slotting Sheffield into Tanaka’s spot in the rotation soon.

There are some finishing touches that need to be accomplished, otherwise it’s going to be more of a rush to try and get him here, Rothschild said.

Sheffield struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings on Friday. He gave up just one hit and two walks and didn’t allow any earned runs, though Louisville scored two.

In six starts at Triple-A, he’s 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA. He’s struck out 27 and walked 15 in 27 1/3 innings. At Double-A, he went 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in five starts.

Boone was asked how Judge, typically so selective at the plate, can also be so aggressive at times.

Some of that is game plan, Boone said. He’ll pick his spots where he’ll go up there and look for a certain pitch sometimes.

Boone added, I think (Judge) gets in those deep counts, too, because of the way they attack him. They’re a little bit fearful of him, certainly careful with him, so they nibble a lot with him more so than most players and he has the ability to control the zone so more often than not, he’s not leaving the zone.

Chubb commanded high praise from Ware, who believes the Broncos secured an ideal complementary player to outside linebacker Von Miller.

The attributes that he really brings to the game stopping the run and being able to be that strong-side guy for Von that’s what you need, Ware said in the interview. They have that tag team again.

Having an effective one-two punch off the edges served the Broncos well during Ware’s three seasons in Denver (2014-16).

With Ware holding down the strong side and Miller the weak side, the Broncos ‘ sack totals ranked ninth in the league in 2014 (41), first in 2015 (52) and third in 2016 (42).

But after Ware’s retirement following the 2016 season, the Broncos struggled to find a player to man the strong side in 2017, dropping to 22nd in the league with 22 sacks as Shane Ray dealt with a wrist injury.

The Jets chose not to improve the position this year.

With the suspension of Mark Ingram, which includes limitations to in-season game-planning and access to training over the first month of the year, the Saints will have to make up plenty of carries, as Ingram (230 attempts) carried the ball nearly twice as much as Kamara did last year. And the Saints don’t have a proven option behind them.

For Kamara, every game in the first month of the season will have to look like his effort against Texas A&M in 2016, by far his standout game at the college level. If workload is going to be an issue for Kamara, it’s going to be apparent in Week 1.

For three years, Ereck Flowers has been a liability in pass protection for the New York Giants. If not for Ben McAdoo and Eli Manning embracing the quick passing game, Flowers would have been exposed even more.

Jenkins is going on his third year as a Jets starting pass-rusher. Frankly, that’s unacceptable. After packing picks to move up to third overall in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, New York took itself out of the top pass-rushing market in the draft. At the same time, the Colts took two pass-rushers in the second round and added McCain in free agency.

They had options. Now their only option is Jenkins putting it on himself to record a sack more than once every 200-plus snaps.

Holder worked 2 1/3 shutout innings to run his streak of not allowing an earned run to 24 1/3 innings over 21 outings.

This was the sixth career walk-off homer and fourth walk-off homer for Stanton.

The 2010 No. 1 overall pick also helped the Devils get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2011-12. When the race got tight in the second half of the season, Hall played his best. He started the 2018 calendar year by recording a point in 26 consecutive games played a run that lasted from Jan. 2 through March 8.

It’s been more about, how can we clinch a playoff spot? How can we keep climbing up the standings and chasing teams in front of us Hall late in the season. Like I’ve said before, I’m relied upon to produce offense for our team, and that’s my role. A lot to guys have roles on this team, and I’m just trying to do my best job with mine.

He entered the season with a career high of 27 goals, and Hall managed to match that number in 2018 after scoring 12 over October, November and December.
